An M.Tech in Applied Geology from IIT-Roorkee, Borpujari worked as a professional journalist for nearly 17 years with leading news organisations like The Sentinel (Guwahati), Press Trust of India (New Delhi) and Deccan Herald (New Delhi bureau).
He won the Swarna Kamal for the Best Film Critic at the 50th National Film Awards, 2003, thereby becoming the first person from the Northeast to win this honour. In 2011, he decided to become a filmmaker, and since then has made several acclaimed documentaries, including "Mayong: Myth/Reality" (which was archived by the Royal Archaeological Institute of Ireland and Great Britain apart from beign selected to 6 international film festivals), "Soccer Queens of Rani" (produced by Rajya Sabha Television) and "Songs of the Blue Hills" (which was selected to 17 international film festivals in the USA, Italy, Poland, Romania, China, etc., as also in India, including the Indian Panorama at the International Film Festival of India in Goa).
Borpujari, who is known for his commitment to the cause of Northeast India, is currently editing an Assamese children's feature film titled "Ishu", produced by Children's Film Society, India (CFSI), Government of India. (the story has the background of the highly-topical social malaise of witch hunting that is prevalent in Assam and several other states).
